The key challenge for the project was to reconcile the position of the views (which are due West) with the solar aspect of the block. Through a series of carefully designed vertical fins, the living areas are protected from hot summer sun, but will be filled with warm sunlight in winter.
As is common on elevated land, the site is steeply sloping which presents both opportunities and constraints. Our team has worked to develop a response to meet our clients’ brief which minimised costs due to excavation and retaining of earth, while also allowing the natural slope of the site to feature strongly in the resolved design.
The interior of the upper level steps down with the slope of the land, creating high ceilings over the main living areas and creating a casual relationship between the public and private areas of the house. A large entertaining deck and double sided fire place complete this spectacular Happy Haus.
Completed late 2017.
